Loop Hearing Assistance Demonstration

Open house demonstration of the new enhanced hearing system installed in the Community Room of the library. Experts will be on hand to answer questions.

Friends of the Oberlin Public Library are sponsoring an open house on Friday, March 2, from 4 to 5:30 PM to introduce the new enhanced hearing system.

Hearing loss is the fastest-growing disability in the US today, according to the Better Hearing Institute. Forty-eight million Americans have hearing loss, seven million of whom are age 6-19. According to the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act, you have a right to hear!

Fortunately, technology can help. The Community Room at Oberlin Public Library is now equipped with an induction loop system that will contribute to a better hearing experience for library programs and meetings.

Friends of Oberlin Public Library, a volunteer association devoted to providing additional resources to the library, spearheaded the project, which was made possible by two generous anonymous donors.

“A hearing loop is to hearing aids what Wi-Fi is to computers, working directly with most hearing aids to deliver clear, sharp, customized sound without the need for headphones or other special devices,” says Anne Conway, the project organizer and FOPL Vice President.

Simply set your hearing aids to the telecoil setting (ask your audiologist if you’re unfamiliar with this feature), sit back, and hear every word. Thanks to the anonymous donors, the Library’s system also has headsets that can be used by people who have hearing challenges but might not need hearing aids or don’t yet have them.

Friends of the Oberlin Public Library are sponsoring an open house to introduce the new system to interested organizations and individuals. The open house will take place on Friday, March 2, from 4 to 5:30 PM in the Library’s Community Room. You’ll be able to try out the system and learn how it can be adapted to almost any setting, from a large auditorium to the TV in your living room. Dr. Richard Hetsko from Oberlin Hearing Care will also be on hand to answer technical questions you may have.
