Extended Description: Art History major Madi Goetzke (OC ‘21) presents a talk analyzing the materials, history, and theory of the Allen's 'Fon bocio.' The wooden figure, likely from Benin or Togo, is layered with strikingly modern and spiritually symbolic elements including a wooden tool, metal cord, and padlocks. Shrouded in layers of cultural secrecy and a complicated provenance, the figure perplexes while also challenging widespread ideas of fetishism in West African objects. | The free event will be followed by a Q&A session moderated by Elizabeth Yearsley (OC ‘20). Contact the Education Department at 440-775-8671 with any questions. | Image: Unrecorded artist or workshop, Republic of Benin or Togo, "Fon bocio," 20th Century. Wood, cloth, locks, keys, and metal. Gift in honor of Alexandra Gould (OC 2011), 2011.26.23A-E.
