Kevin R.E. Greenwood, Curator of Asian Art, discusses Mary Ainsworth and her 1950 bequest to the AMAM of 1,500 19th-century Japanese woodblock prints, many of which are now on view in Ripin Gallery.
The AMAM's current exhibition, "Ukiyo-e Prints from the Mary Ainsworth Collection" (on view January 14 through June 14, 2020), includes some of the museum's most important Japanese woodblock prints. But who was Mary Ainsworth? How did she develop such a fine collection? And how have the 1,500 prints been featured in exhibitions and educational programs since she donated them in 1950? Join Kevin R.E. Greenwood, Joan L. Danforth Curator of Asian Art, for a talk that addresses these questions and provides newly discovered information on Ainsworth and her collection. This lecture, titled "Many Ways of Seeing: The Mary Ainsworth Collection," is part of the AMAM's ongoing Allen After Hours program (formerly known as "First Thursday"). Light refreshments will be provided and galleries will remain open until 7:30 PM.
